Good news everyone! Mozilla has pushed their upcoming mobile browser aka Fennec into Alpha faze and lets everyone try it out before Mozilla developers come up with a more stable and capable release. And that is good for a number of reasons. First of all Fennec 2.0 Alpha 1 is compatible with Android version 2.0 and higher and MeeGo platforms which means that apart from most Android devices you can also install it on Nokia N900. Please note that the latest Alpha release of the Fennec is optimized for Nexus One and will behave differently while running on other devices.
Android market is obviously very important for mobile software companies but right now it really starts to look like Mozilla deosn’t want to leave MeeGo aside for long too. Probably because MeeGo is Linux-based and desktop architecture is what Mozilla trying to bring with Fennec 2.0 which is based on Firefox 4.0. That means Fennec makes the best out of latest Web technologies such as HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. But not only this is what travels from desktops to smartphones with Fennec. They have also added Firefox Sync, add-ons, tabbed browsing, customizable start page, etc. – everything for effortless switching from PC to smartphone.
But mobile experience will never be like desktop one so Fennec also caries such straight smartphone features like pinch-to-zoom or double-tab to zoom content in and out, press-and-hold for a submenu and even tabs are not tabs as such they are small thumbnails of the page they take you to. But that’s alright, isn’t it? Anyway, because it is an Alpha, it has bugs. So if you are interested in testing Fennec 2.0 on Android, MeeGo, Windows, Linux, Mac or you want to develop add-ons for it don’t forget to look through its known issues at Mozilla website.
